What is a therapy
dog?
AAA/T
(animal-assisted-activity/therapy) dogs are trained to do tasks for people other
than their handlers, interacting with them as directed by their handlers. They
are expected to work reliably with others, often amidst many distractions.
Animal-assisted-activities (AAA) refers to the general “meet and greet”
activities that involve pets visiting people. Animal-assisted-therapy (AAT)
refers to the goal-directed intervention in which an animal that meets specific
criteria is an integral part of the treatment process. AAT is directed by
health/human services professional as a normal part of their practice.
AAA/AAT
promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive
functioning and provide opportunities for motivational, educational,
recreational, and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life.
